His Story: "CBS' "Come on and watch some basketball"

One of my favorite sports radio host Steve Czaban ( http://www.czabe.com/ ) retold an awesome story this morning of a little song he wrote last year. Steve wrote it to the CBS tune for the NCAA Tournament. You know the one that begins every CBS broadcast of the tourney. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkaS6sgbEg4&feature=related  ) So here is the original story along with Czabe's awesome lyrics. Enjoy. "About a week ago before I went off to Vegas to go 1-7 on the Sweet 16 I was feeling a little bit silly. So decided to author the “lost lyrics” to the CBS basketball theme. Of course, there ARE no lyrics, but it didn’t prevent me from jotting down some idiotic booze-fueled diddies in my hotel room, and attributing it all to the “Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass” with a fictional “original” version of the song called… “Come On And Watch Some Basketball…” I knew that 98% of my radio audience would see it for what it was: a complete, stupid, and perhaps slightly funny ...

My ACC, KOD, ABC, KJV

After the first round of the ACC tourney, it looked like the Mike G. Kiss Of Death would strike in epidemic proportions this time around. After the first day my picks were 1-3. Amazingly the KOD took Friday off and my picks went 3-1. Now we're down to the final 4 and the only question left is how long UNC can avoid the KOD? It's now official, ABC has cancelled the funniest new show this season when they sent "Carpoolers" to the garage. On top of that they decided, because of the writers strike, to shorten LOST by 3 episodes and move it to 10pm. ABC is killing me. I only watch 2-3 hours of TV a week, is the KOD now stalking not only my favorite sports teams and picks by my TV shows too? Speaking of LOST, now that I've had a day or two to digest the last episode, I've developed my own theories into the mystery surrounding the death of Jin. The tombstone said Jin died the day of the crash which obviously is a lie because a) we see him on the island alive long aft...

My 2008 NFL Playoff Predictions or My NFL Kiss of Death

My Thoughts On The Baseball Steroid Controversy

So the Mitchell report came out today detailing his 2 year 20 million dollar investigation into the use of steroids in baseball. His findings were shocking...there IS rampant steroid abuse in baseball! Really? I had no idea? I mean I thought it was natural for guys to become better athletes when they hit 35 years plus. Or for guys domes to grow 5x the normal size. I really thought Mcgwire and Sosa hit all those home runs legit. And you mean Bonds may have lied when he said he never knowingly took steroids? Look, all this report did was put names/faces on the drugs. Even the most casual fan knew something was going on. We as fans didn't care because we love power in sports. Whether it's our guy hitting the long ball or our ace topping 100mph and racking up 10 K's a game, we want to see impressive human feats. No matter how they may or may not have been achieved. The owners turned a blind eye because after the strike they would do anything to gets butts back in the seats and ...

His Story: Jim Grobe

The following article comes from http://www.prodigalsonmagazine.com/ One of the reasons that we love sports is because there is always the chance that the underdog can overtake the favorite. We watch to see which team that is said to have no shot will prevail over the more powerful or more storied team, giving us the hope that we too can overcome incredible odds in our lives. When these upsets happen, they offer a sense of hope to all of us that we will have a day that we will shine as well. Last season, the Wake Forest Demon Deacon football team proved that they too could overcome the odds and become champions. In the preseason, they were picked to finish last in their division with the experts believing that they didn’t have what it took to excel in the ACC. They believed in themselves and overcame injuries, history, and skeptics to win the ACC Football Championship and play in the Orange Bowl. A school long known for its’ basketball and golf, with such famous alumni as Arnold Palm...

My Football Love'n Weekend

To me one of the best parts about the extended Thanksgiving holiday is the seemingly 24/7 football you can watch on TV. Most years the games are meaningless or rather boring but this week featured 3 of the best games I have seem in a long time. First was Arkansas' 3OT thriller over #1 ranked LSU, then the 4OT defeat of UK at the hands on Tennessee. And not to be outdone the NFL had one of their best games of the year last night when Chicago came from behind to defeat Denver in OT. What a great weekend for football fans. To top it off Wake crushed Vanderbilt on their way to their 8th victory of the season (only the 5th time in school history they have reached that mark) and back to back bowl births for the first time ever. Right now it looks like Wake will be in the bowls at either Charlotte or Nashville. Beth and I have decided that which ever game they go to we'll be there. I'm hoping for Nashville! During my many hours of football gluttony this past weekend, I heard some ...

My 2007-2008 ACC Basketball Predictions

Last night my family and I had the chance to share in something special. We loaded up the car and headed out to the "Joel" for the opening game of Wake Forest's 2007-2008 season. But the night was much more meaningful then just another opening season game. Last night was all about our late Skip Prosser who passed away suddenly this past July. With the honoring of his family at mid court, to the announcement that the ACC distinguished service award would be renamed the "Skip Posser Award", to a video tribute, to the unveiling of a commemorative banner in the rafters of the "Joel", it was a night I am proud to say I was able to witness first hand. Onto the game...I didn't have clue what to expect out of this team as far as talent or emotion. But boy did I LOVE what I saw. I know Wake was only playing Fairfield but the talent and execution of their game plane was light years ahead of the past two Wake teams. They played with confidence and a "let...

My Bracketology: The Results Blog

At the beginning of the NCAA tournament, I devised and very unscientific research study to see what strategy worked best when filling out my bracket. As a refresher from a previous blog, this was the out come of my picks along with my various strategies: My Brain: I picked each game with logic and reason using my knowledge of college basketball. Winner: Florida My Heart: I picked each game based on my bias opinion of who I wanted to win. Winner: Louisville My Gut: I looked at each game and picked the winners based on my gut feeling, trying my best not to over think it or let my emotions decided. Winner: Florida My Top Seeds: I picked the higher seeded team to win each game. Winner: Ohio State My Coin Flip: I coined flipped every game to decided the outcome. The higher seeds were always heads and I flipped best two out of three for each game. Winner: Georgetown There were 63 possible picks throughout the entire tournament. I will give my results in order of best to worst and highli...

My Best Sports Month Ever

Image
As an avid sports fan, it's gets no better then it does each and ever April. I challenge anyone to come up with a better month in sports then this one. Each April begins with the NCAA Basketball Championship where this year I'll sit and dream of what might have been if Oden and Conely had chosen WFU over OSU. ( Wake was their 2nd choice if you didn't know) Next you have MLB opening day. A time where I can once again watch my Braves do just enough to win in the regular season only to collapse in the fall classic. Then it moves on to the Masters, "A tradition unlike any other" (In my best Jim Nance voice). I love Tiger Woods and I wouldn't be disappointed if he won the next 20 Masters. I'll go on record and say now that no other athlete in the history of sports as dominated his/her sport the way that Tiger has/is. He's better at his sport then anyone else ever at their sport. Yes, even Jordan and basketball. Next we have the beginning of the NBA and NHL ...

My Bracketology

It's that time of the year again when everyone and their mother fills out a NCAA basketball championship bracket. To help feed our addiction to this ever growing phenomenon, Yahoo Sports is letting you fill out 5 brackets under the same Yahoo ID. So since I have five brackets at my disposal, I've decided to conduct a very unscientific experiment. I am filling out all five brackets with totally different ground rules and see which way, if any, works the best. Or is this whole bracket business just chance and dumb luck. My experiment and projected winners are as follows: My Brain: I picked each game with logic and reason using my knowledge of college basketball. Winner: Florida My Heart: I picked each game based on my bias opinion of who I wanted to win. Winner: Louisville My Gut: I looked at each game and picked the winners based on my gut feeling, trying my best not to over think it or let my emotions decided. Winner: Florida My Top Seeds: I picked the higher seeded team t...

My Football Fantasy

At this time I'm deep into my fantasy football playoffs. After a long a grueling season, all three of my football teams made the playoffs. My regular season finishes were 1st, 2nd, and 4th. This week will be the semi-finals for each league. I have been lucky enough to still be alive in each. can a triple crown be possible? Could I win the championship in all three leagues? A feat of such magnitude would but me along side the all-time greats: Jordan, Tiger, Brady, Jeter, and Ric Flair. I have to admit that when began the season, I was a little worried that playing in three leagues was a bit much. Then my friend told me was was playing in 10. So I guess if he's a "fantaholic" then I'd just be a casual player. Whatever you want to call me, I'll be the first to admit that when it comes to fantasy sports, I have a problem. I'm a very, very competitive person by nature. I want to win at everything. And If I don't win, I'll try harder next time. I also se...

My Sports Week: The Best Ever??

Image
After hanging around 8th-10th place in fantasy baseball standings all year, I make an epic comeback to clinch the 6th and last spot in our playoffs (I had to take out Tyler to do it, but hey, it's every man for himself) Greece rolls over Team USA in the World basketball Championships... UNC gets beat by a weak Rutgers team (at home none the less)... Duke loses (shut out) to a Division 1-AA school... Team Greece (Aaron and myself) destroyed Team Gay (Kipp & Bobby) in two games of Rook... And last but not least, Wake rolls to an impressive opening season win! Yes, this was a great week in sports! On a side note, RIP Steve Irwin :(
