This will be the last of my political rants. I promise. This was written a few weeks ago but I just ran across it today. It would be really funny if it weren't so true. I told Beth I wasn't going to comment on the results of our election for fear that I would say something that might offend one of my many friends that support our newly elected presient. My good friend Joel wrote this little piece and I thought it was worth passing along... Get ready for the liberal supermajority. Not only does it seem likely that Barak Obama will win the presidency, but the Senate Republicans will lose so many seats that they will be unable to filibuster and block seriously flawed bills. An op ed piece in the Wall Street Journal says that this occurred two other times in our nation’s history: 1933 and 1965. The article speculates that Democrats will vastly expand the government to achieve the welfare-state liberals now can only dream of. Once in place, such legislation will be nearly impossible to repeal just as happened in the past. Today was our NC primary, which in every other year has meant very little since our primary comes so late. But not this year. This go around we're the feature on every national newscast. But since I'm registered Republican I still didn't have a chance to effect the outcome of the closest nomination battle in recent memory. So I did the same thing I've done for the past two primaries, I cast my vote for president to Mr. Alan Keyes. http://www.alankeyes.com/ I did make a few observations while I was casting my vote: 1) I was never asked to prove who I was. I gave the lady my name, she looked it up, then told me to move to the next table. Isn't this how voter fraud happens? I arrive at the home where the reception for Mike Huckabee is being held around 5:45pm. The house was a very large, older, multi-million dollar home in a high profile location in Greensboro. Once I found a place to park I made my way to the house and passed Mike Huckabee outside giving a speech to a flock of local reporters and media outlets. Once inside the home I found the person who had been my contact and was nice enough to allow me to attend. I offered to help that evening in any way and she said she did have one thing that needed to be done; she asked if I could pass out "Huckabee for President" stickers to everyone. I guess all my years of passing our stickers for WBFJ at the Dixie Classic Fair did come in useful. This is where I made what would be the most critical decision of the night. I could stay inside and mingle throughout the already crowed house and pass out the stickers which would require me having to start up conversations with people or I could go outside ...

Last week my friend Ginger emailed to say she was going to attend a Mike Huckabee fundraiser in Greensboro. The "gathering" is a $100-$2,000 per person event. Needless to say I didn't have the money to join her. So on a hunch I emailed the Huckabee folks and told them who I was (a young Baptist pastor) what I did (youth, college, and young adult ministry) and what I've done (served as a presidential volunteer when President Bush came to Kernersville in 2005 - you can read all about that in my blog archive for December '05) I also told them that I'd love the opportunity to meet Mike but there was no way I could afford the cost of the gathering. The Huckabee folks emailed back and said they would pass my email along to the fundraiser host and if they would/could let me join them then they would be in touch. A friend ask me what is the "Fair Tax". Since this will be one of the top issues in the upcoming election, I'll do my best to explain it. Several months ago I asked my friend Ginger, who is very involved in politics, to point me toward a candidate she thought might appeal to me. She immediately mentioned Mike Huckabee. I had never heard of the guy and after doing some research it became very apparent 99% of people being polled had never heard of him either. So I casted him off as a nice guy with the some good ideas that would never have a chance of winning. Now we fast forward to November 16th and two polling stats are worth looking at. Mike Huckabee who was an unknown former governor of Arkansas a few months ago is now second in the Iowa polls at 24% (just 3% behind the leader Romney) and is tied with Romney nationally. The amazing thing about his campaign is that Romney has spent over $10,000,000 on television ads in IA, NH, and SC. Huckabee has spent $0. Last week someone in my neighborhood put out two "Ron Paul for President" signs in their yard. When I got home I asked Beth if she knew who this "Paul" guy was and she had never heard of the guy either. But like countless other Americans each day, I now know who Ron Paul is and for the first time this year I'm actually intrigued by one of the 2008 presidential hopefuls. Here's what it means to be a "centrist": CENTRISTS espouse a "middle ground" regarding government control of the economy and personal behavior. Depending on the issue, they sometimes favor government intervention and sometimes support individual freedom of choice. I sent in my absentee ballot today. Beth and I will be gone on election day so I wanted to make sure my voice was heard. I have voted in every primary and general election since Nov. of '92 and I wasn't about to miss one now. I was raised to believe, maybe not by my parents but by society, that if you were a Christian, you voted Republican. The church I grew up in would have pamphlets each election time you could "pick up" stating who you should vote for and why. I would take that into the voting box with me and vote away. That was 14 years and several elections ago. I've since come to the conclusion that God may not be a Republican. I arrive at Kerwin Baptist Church at 9:30am. That was the designated parking lot for all employees of Deer and volunteers. I had to board a shuttle bus to take me to the plant. I was on the bus with about 80 plant workers who all looked at me like “who is this guy”. I sat and didn’t say a word to anyone. As I usually do, I kept my ears open to the surrounding conversations. One guy was saying how he wasn’t going to come but since it was raining and he didn’t have anything else to do he thought he’d come down and see what was going on.” I wanted to turn around and yell, “It’s the PRESIDENT!!! How could you even think of not coming?” The bus eventually left and we got to the pant at 10:00am. I went right in and got my volunteer badge. It was a huge 3” by 5” badge that said, “The Visit Of The President To Kernersville, NC”. Not the way I would have worded it but oh well, at least I had one souvenir to take home.
